Marilyn Martella, Clarinet

Marilyn Martella received her first clarinet instruction from her father, an outstanding saxophonist and clarinetist.  Her principal teacher was Clement Hutchinson of San Jose State University and the San Jose Symphony.  Marilyn's formal training culminated in degrees from California State University, San Jose (B.A.), and the University of Southern California (M.M.), where she studied with Mitchell Lurie and Michelle Zulovsky.

Marilyn has served as co-principal clarinetist of the Women's Philharmonic since its inaugural season in 1982.

In her 25 year career, Marilyn has performed with many of the San Francisco Bay Area orchestras including the San Francisco Opera and Ballet Orchestras, the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, the San Jose Symphony, the Classical Philharmonic, the Cabrillo Music Festival Orchestra and the Lake Tahoe Summer Music Festival Orchestra.

Marilyn is a founding member of the Women's Philharmonic Woodwind Quintet and has been a member of the Twin Pines Woodwind Quintet since 1980, performing in concert halls and schools throughout Northern California.

Teaching is an important part of Marilyn's professional life. From 1982 to 1989 she taught at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Since 1990 she has enjoyed an association with the San Francisco Waldorf School, where she maintains a private clarinet studio.
